Can I practice yoga in my first trimester?
There are differing opinions about this one and again, it depends on your level of yoga experience. If you practised yoga before conceiving then it is less of a ‘stressor’ on your body to practice during the first trimester, than it would be if you had never done yoga and suddenly started when you got pregnant. During the first trimester your yoga practice should be more restorative and nurturing to allow the body, mind and heart to adjust to the major changes occuring at this time. Second and third trimesters focus more on building stamina, inner power and physical endurance, as well as balancing the mind and emotions with pranayama (breath work), meditation and visualisation techniques. For your safety and the safety of your unborn child, please remember to inform your teacher if your are trying for a baby or if there is any possibility that you may be pregnant.
